Drinker Biddle Adds Former FBI Supervisory Special Agent and Digital Laboratory Director Jason G. Weiss as Cybersecurity Counsel in California
Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP today announced that Jason G. Weiss has joined the firm’s Los Angeles office as counsel in the Information Governance and E-discovery group.
For more than two decades, Weiss served with distinction at the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Most recently, he was a Supervisory Special Agent in the FBI Los Angeles Cyber and Forensics branch, where he founded, designed and led a nationally recognized and accredited computer forensics laboratory. With deep expertise in the management of data breaches, computer intrusion, cybercrime, forensic investigation, white collar crime, counterintelligence, and counterterrorism, Weiss also provided FBI-wide legal, technical and management expertise in connection with numerous nationally recognized investigations.
At Drinker Biddle, Weiss will focus his practice on cybersecurity incident preparedness and response, compliance with the California Consumer Privacy Act and other information governance laws and requirements, as well as data analytics, investigations and e-discovery.
“Cybersecurity incidents can quickly result in often unrecoverable exposure for a company, which is why Jason is going to be a valuable and strategic resource for our clients,” said Bennett B. Borden, co-chair of the Information Governance and E-discovery group and the firm’s chief data scientist. “His experience leading cutting-edge work on these fast moving, complex issues at the FBI will translate into insightful assessment and guidance on what a company needs to protect what is often its most valuable and vulnerable asset — it’s data.”
Weiss holds numerous certifications and memberships in the areas of global information security, computer forensics, laboratory management and more. His professional training includes 2,500 hours of specialized computer forensics, cyber, management and laboratory accreditation classes and instruction.
Information Governance and E-discovery Co-chair Jay Brudz added, “As information breaches become larger and more frequent, Jason’s extensive knowledge of data security issues from the investigative and enforcement perspective will complement Drinker Biddle’s strong national team. He is well-versed in the complex regulatory landscape and qualified to provide superior counsel on information privacy and security practices, development of information governance programs, responses to regulatory compliance inquiries and investigations, and what is critical in the unfortunate aftermath of a breach.”
Weiss served as a legal clerk for the Honorable D. Howell Jensen, U.S. District Court, and at the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office. He earned his Juris Doctor degree from Santa Clara University School of Law, and his bachelor’s degree, with honors, from the University of California, Los Angeles.
