In Memoriam: John F. Beggan

We are sorry to report the loss of our former colleague and good friend John F. Beggan. John was a partner in the Corporate Tax Department of Gardner Carton and Douglas and practiced at GCD for 35 years until his retirement in August 2000.

John was widely recognized as an excellent tax attorney and was a great friend to colleagues throughout the Chicago office and to many of our alumni. John graduated from the University of Notre Dame Law School in 1960 and worked in the Tax Division of the U.S. Justice Department in Washington D.C. for five years before he and his wife Mary Lou moved to Chicago and John joined Gardner Carton.

During his career, John provided expert tax advice for many significant corporate transactions and he played an active role on behalf of the firm in recruiting promising young law students from his alma mater. John was an avid sports fan and he was very accomplished at the sport of curling. John was an affable, very humble and joyful soul, who loved to share a good story or two. He will be missed.

John is survived by his wife Mary Lou Beggan, daughter Ann (Blair) Subry, son Tom (Deborah) Beggan and grandchild Hunter Subry.
