HealthTech Rising – Midwest: Highlights and Photos From Chicago
News
On June 11, Drinker Biddle launched its inaugural HealthTech Rising – Midwest conference in partnership with MATTER, Chicago’s leading health tech incubator.
The sold-out event brought together a select group of more than 150 investors, entrepreneurs, life sciences and health technology executives, and health care providers to advance new ideas, growth strategies and partnership opportunities.
An industry panel, The Midwest and the Future of HealthTech, featured leaders from the Merck Global Health Innovation Fund, Preventice, Apervita and Jump Capital. Attendees were provided with advice on raising capital, finding the right investor/startup company relationship and perspectives on the value of the Midwestern health tech ecosystem.
The MATTER Company Showcase featured five emerging health tech companies competing in the final round of the HealthTech Rising Pitch Competition. Resonance Medical was chosen as the overall winner by the audience and a panel of judges that included leaders from Tigerlabs, Allscripts Solutions Development, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, Vilicus Ventures, UPMC Enterprises, 7wire Ventures and Topping Capital. Resonance Medical is commercializing a proprietary software upgrade for cochlear implants that promises to dramatically improve hearing and battery life with the goal of better connecting people with each other and with their world.
The highlight of the day was the interactive roundtable discussion, led by Drinker Biddle Intellectual Property partner Ira Kalina and Nick Araco, the firm’s Director of Growth Strategies and Business Development. Conference participants engaged in a collaborative dialogue and produced actionable outputs aimed at accelerating opportunities for health tech innovation.
Attendees left with valuable insights, new connections and a greater understanding of how they can compete now and in the future.
The Host Committee for HealthTech Rising – Midwest was led by Ira Kalina, Jennifer Breuer, partner and Vice Chair of the Health Care Practice Group, Ian Goldstein, partner and head of Drinker Biddle’s Emerging Company and Venture Capital practice team, and Intellectual Property partner Carrie Beyer, in collaboration with MATTER leadership. The committee served as the architects of the conference.
Our online community – The Health Tech Alliance, powered by Drinker Biddle -- will launch in late August, 2015, and will be home to the connections, content, events and opportunities for those active or interested in the health tech ecosystem. Development efforts for HealthTech Rising East and West, as well as HealthTech Rising – Midwest 2016 are underway.
