Faegre Baker Daniels Honors Life and Legacy of Eric Thieme

Faegre Baker Daniels celebrates the life and legacy of colleague and friend Eric T. Thieme, who passed away on February 11, 2016, at age 34. He will be greatly missed by firm colleagues and clients.

Before graduating summa cum laude from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 2007, Eric was a summer associate at what then was Baker & Daniels law firm. After graduation, he joined Baker & Daniels’ health care and life sciences group as an associate. In 2010, he left the firm to become General Counsel and Compliance Officer at the Indiana Health Information Exchange (IHIE) — one of the first and the nation’s largest health information exchange.

At IHIE, Eric was promoted to Vice President of Administration, as well as continuing to serve as General Counsel, until last August when he returned to FaegreBD as counsel and leader of the firm’s health information technology (HIT) practice. In his career, Eric developed a national reputation for his experience and expertise at the intersection of health care, privacy and security, and information technology. He counseled clients on the cutting edge of legal issues facing today’s HIT industry, including data use and exchange, data center outsourcing, cloud computing, telehealth and health privacy and security matters.

Eric was a leader in his profession, including serving as continuing legal education chair of the Indianapolis Bar Association’s health and life sciences section; advisory board for the Hoosier Healthcare Innovation Challenge; and workgroup member of Managed Emergency Surge for Healthcare, Inc.

Eric, a 2003 graduate of Miami (Ohio) University with a bachelor’s degree in economics, is survived by his wife, Ries, and their four young children.

Faegre Baker Daniels has established the Eric T. Thieme Children’s Education Trust to accept donations for his children’s future college expenses. Contributions can be given through the Eric Thieme Kids’ Education Fund account on crowdrise.com.
