Health Care Attorney Amy Johnson Joins Drinker Biddle in Washington, D.C.

National law firm Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP welcomes counsel Amy L. Johnson to its industry-leading Health Care Group. She is based in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office.

Johnson most recently served as Associate General Counsel, Executive Director of Insurance at Mission Health System, Inc. In that role, she managed all physician employment contracts and implemented and managed a comprehensive liability insurance program. Johnson also provided legal counsel on a wide range of issues, from non-clinical risk management to complex compliance matters associated with Mission Health’s recent combination with HCA Healthcare, one of the nation’s largest for-profit providers. A Drinker Biddle deal team comprising more than 80 lawyers across the firm’s offices and specialty practice areas advised Mission Health in the $1.468 billion transaction, which closed on February 1, 2019.

“Amy brings significant nonprofit health system experience to the firm, aligning perfectly with our nationally recognized health care capabilities and strategic growth initiatives,” said Douglas Swill, chair of Drinker Biddle’s Health Care Group. “Her understanding of the industry and the wide swath of legal and regulatory challenges associated with it makes her a valuable resource for our clients."

Johnson’s firsthand knowledge of legal issues faced by nonprofit health system clients also includes medical staff relations and physician arrangements — including privileging, credentialing, peer review, contracts and transactions — and real estate — including buying, selling, joint ventures, timeshare leasing and lease compliance. She has a deep understanding of federal and state regulations, including Stark, HIPAA, and fraud and abuse laws in connection with all aspects of hospital operations.

Prior to Mission Health, Johnson was an associate at Dykema Gossett PLLC. She previously served as a legislative aide to the Michigan House of Representatives.

Johnson earned her J.D. degree, cum laude, from Michigan State University College of Law, where she was senior notes editor of the Michigan State Law Review. She also holds a master’s degree in business administration from Western Carolina University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan.
