Former New York Congresswoman Nominated to Consumer Product Safety Commission

On Monday, May 27th, 2013, President Obama nominated former Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle (R-NY) to serve as a commissioner on the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC). Buerkle represented New York’s 25th Congressional District in 2011 and 2012.

The CSPC is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with the use of the thousands of consumer products under the agency's jurisdiction. The five commissioners who head up the CSPC serve concurrent terms of seven years. Buerkle’s nomination is expected to expedite Senate confirmation of Marietta Robinson, the President’s Democratic nominee for the other currently vacant CSPC commissioner position. If confirmed, Buerkle’s term would begin retroactively in 2011 and end in 2018.

Former Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack, now with FaegreBD Consulting, served with Buerkle and was the Chairwoman of the House Energy & Commerce Subcommittee with jurisdiction over the CSPC. “Ann Marie has demonstrated throughout her impressive career that she is a thoughtful and independent thinker, and she will excel at the CSPC,” said Bono Mack, “I am encouraged by her nomination.”
