New Food Safety Rules Mean Big Changes

Faegre Baker Daniels partner Andy Anderson and associates Steve Toeniskoetter and Rachael Dettmann Spiegel authored an article in Ethanol Producer Magazine on how newly enacted requirements of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) will impact ethanol plants.

The authors explained that while many aspects of FSMA regulations touch the daily operations of ethanol plants, the preventive control rule is the one that ethanol producers should be thinking about in regards to facility procedures. In the article, Anderson, Toeniskoetter and Spiegel detailed the two key components of the preventive control rule, as well as steps ethanol producers can take to be in full compliance.

The deadline for the FDA to release final rules on preventive controls for animal feed is Aug. 30, 2015. Ethanol facilities that produce animal feed co-products will have one year from the official release date to comply with the new guidelines.
