DEI Efforts Will Continue if We Are Willing to Continue

Chief Diversity Officer Maria Lewis authored an article for The Legal Intelligencer on how diverse groups and allies can work together in support of a push toward a more diverse, equitable and inclusive (DEI) legal landscape.
Lewis explained that many organizations and people, such as the Philadelphia Diversity Law Group, have been invested in the work to support, mentor and promote the underrepresented in the law for decades. And while the work is difficult and exhausting, it is essential, and she noted that the legal industry has a responsibility to move it forward. “We should not rest in thinking that our efforts to date are enough,” Lewis said.
Lewis added, “May I suggest that the expression of exhaustion in this work is a place for the privileged even if understandable. Let’s pause and reset and reinvigorate each other when necessary, but don’t give up now.” She also detailed how DEI efforts require a strategic approach, sustained tenacity and a positive attitude.
