Libby Baney Breaks Down Legality of Online Pharmaceutical Advertising With Pain News Network

Government and regulatory partner Libby Baney recently explained the legality of pharmaceutical advertising on social media platforms such as Facebook for Pain News Net.

Although their guidelines do not permit the advertisement of prescription drugs, Facebook does not monitor ads through Legiscript, which helps companies screen advertisements for illicit advertising requests.

Baney, an advisor to the Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies, estimated that there are a great number of active online pharmacies worldwide operating or illegally or engaging in fraud.

“A number of years ago, the social media platforms were admonished by the FDA to try to do more to prevent this type of advertising or content to consumers,” Baney said. “And many, including Facebook, made commitments or pledges to government and public health officials to do more to screen their ads for this type of content.”

Baney further encouraged consumers to remain aware of possible online pharmaceutical drug scams, especially on social media sites.
