We hosted an engaging discussion with Sarah-Lloyd Stevenson and Matt Rubin, two former Faegre Drinker colleagues who now serve on Amazon’s Public Policy team. With more than a decade of experience advocating for health care policies, they shared insights around the innovative and nuanced role that the public policy team plays in advancing Amazon’s mission to deliver choice, convenience and continuity of care.

Amazon supports policies that make health care accessible and effective for patients — wherever, whenever. Many of the policies they support and advocate for — such as message-based care, price transparency, digital-forward tools, and telehealth and home delivery medications — are aimed at delivering convenience, providing patient choice, and improving continuity of care. Not only does Amazon’s Public Policy team serve as an extension of its business teams by advocating for policies at state, federal and administration levels, but they also act as the bridge between different service lines internally to ensure everyone is aligned with the company’s core goals.

Given that it is one of the largest and most heavily regulated industries, health care will continue to be an evolving landscape. While there is no single solution for a perfect health care system, investment and innovation are key drivers for progress — especially for legislative priorities like data security and provider transparency. Looking ahead, policies around artificial intelligence (AI) will also be instrumental in shaping the health care landscape — especially as it relates to streamlining processes, enhancing care and improving continuity of care for patients.
