Indiana Lawyer Highlights Faegre Drinker Medical-Legal Pro Bono Clinic

Pro bono counsel Monica Fennell sat down with Indiana Lawyer to discuss her rejoining the firm and work overseeing a pro bono medical-legal partnership with Eskenazi Health, where attorneys and summer associates helped write wills for low-income patients.

According to Fennell, the clinic marked eight years of pro bono partnership between the firm and Eskenazi. Joined by summer associates Paige Wynkoop, Shelby Mohr and Kathryn Powell, Fennell said volunteers drafted 15 sets of documents for patients at the hospital this summer.

"Unfortunately, writing wills forces people to confront an ugly truth," Powell said. "However, the attorneys I worked with helped people understand that, although it's not a ‘fun’ topic, it's a necessary one. By helping to draft wills, we helped give the people of Indianapolis some security knowing that everything will be taken care of should something happen to them."

Additionally, Fennell said summer associates paired up with attorneys to help pro bono clients through Indiana Free Legal Answers, a virtual legal advice clinic where Hoosiers can have their civil legal questions answered. Fennell reported that 97 Faegre Drinker attorneys have helped answer over 2,600 legal questions through the virtual clinic.
