How You Can Help Immigrant Neighbors Who Are in Need

In the article “How you can help immigrant neighbors who are in need,” associates Molly Madden and Cassidy Segura Clouse highlighted how attorneys seeking to gain pro bono experience can volunteer with the National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC), which aims to make immigration processes more understandable and equitable for low-income immigrants in Indiana and Illinois.
The authors note that NIJC provides legal services to more than 11,000 people each year. They encouraged those interested in volunteering with the organization to visit immigrantjustice.org to fill out an interest form under “Be a Pro Bono Attorney” to be matched with potential clients. NIJC needs “all hands-on deck” for matters such as asylum cases, securing visas, and representing clients before immigration courts. While pro bono work with NIJC is tailored to litigations, attorneys from all areas of practice can contribute through statute interpretation and case organization.
“Contributing to NIJC’s cause can take many forms,” the authors note. “People who speak multiple languages can volunteer on a one-off or ongoing basis to interpret or translate for NIJC clients, for example. And if you or your organization do not have the capacity to take on a full case, consider donating as a way to support NIJC’s cause.”
