Elizabeth A. Charles

Overview

Elizabeth Charles litigates complex commercial and intellectual property disputes. Elizabeth focuses her work on trade secret and noncompetition agreements, as well as advising and representing clients on claims arising under the United States and Indiana constitutions, in both federal and state court.

Trial Experience

Elizabeth has successfully defended a preliminary injunction involving a noncompete in Indiana Commercial Court, which included preparing for depositions, drafting both preliminary injunction briefing and post-hearing briefing, and preparing for a two-day evidentiary hearing. Elizabeth also has worked on numerous appeals including drafting briefing before the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Circuits as well as before the Indiana Court of Appeals and Indiana Supreme Court.

Elizabeth has handled direct and cross-examination of fact witnesses at the trial level and has presented oral argument in federal district court. Elizabeth has experience in various aspects of legal proceedings, including legal research, motion practice, discovery, and trial. She also has drafted critical briefs at all stages of litigation from motions to dismiss, motions for preliminary injunction, summary judgment motions, post-trial briefing. Elizabeth also has extensive experience preparing witnesses for depositions.

Prior Experience

Elizabeth served as a law clerk for the Office of Litigation of the Small Business Administration in Washington, D.C. As a clerk, Elizabeth researched federal regulations, standard operating procedures and case law to analyze constitutional, regulatory, bankruptcy and procurement law issues, and drafted legal memoranda and agency correspondence.

During law school, Elizabeth was a summer associate for Faegre Drinker. She conducted legal research and drafted memoranda on intellectual property rights, enforcement of contracts, and changes in secured transaction law. She also drafted court documents including motions for summary judgment and notices of removal. In addition, Elizabeth assisted with a long-term, multi-office pro bono research project regarding human trafficking.

Personal Interests

Elizabeth enjoys running and practicing yoga. She is also an avid home cook and baker, and on the weekends she often spends time experimenting in the kitchen.
