Consumer Product Regulatory Compliance
Emily helps clients understand and adhere to the complex matrix of safety regulations governing the consumer product industry, including providing guidance on product safety standards, reporting obligations, product recalls and risk assessments.
She guides clients on compliance with the Consumer Product Safety Act (CPSA) and regulations enforced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), including Reese’s Law, the CPSA, Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA), Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA) and other regulations. Her in-depth knowledge of CPSC compliance requirements allows her to effectively counsel clients on developing internal safety protocols, ensuring timely and accurate reporting, and managing CPSC investigations and enforcement actions.
Emily has represented a diverse range of clients, including manufacturers, distributers and retailers, helping them safeguard their reputations and manage regulatory compliance. Her detail-oriented approach enables clients to take preventive measures to avoid the risks associated with noncompliance, such as fines, penalties and reputational damage.
Product Liability & Mass Tort Defense
Emily has significant experience defending companies in high-stakes mass tort and product liability litigation. She is experienced in virtually all aspects of trial law, including managing local counsel, e-discovery, conducting and defending depositions, preparing corporate witnesses, drafting dispositive and evidentiary motions, negotiating favorable settlements, and trial preparation.
She has represented clients in cases involving food, cosmetics and medical devices, as well as electrical, technology and other products. Emily’s defense work has spanned single-plaintiff lawsuits, class actions and multidistrict litigation (MDL), often involving allegations of design defects, failure to warn, breach of warranty and safety compliance violations.
Her experience in defending against these types of claims gives Emily insight into the litigation risks companies face, which she uses to help clients develop stronger compliance frameworks and avoid future litigation.
Prior Experience
Before her legal career, Emily was a technology consultant with Deloitte Consulting in Washington, D.C., where she worked on financial management software implementations at various government agencies. She also spent two years teaching elementary reading in Baltimore, Maryland, as a member of Teach for America.
Personal Interests
A native Hoosier, Emily enjoys living in Indianapolis with her husband, young son (Bowen, age 3) and daughter (Marin, age 1). She loves any opportunity to flex her left brain and create something — whether it’s crafting with her kids or planning her next home-renovation project. She also has an insatiable appetite for thrifting and antiquing, and loves learning how to implement more environmentally sustainable practices into her daily life.
