Mary Katherine Planchet

Overview

Mary-Kate Planchet counsels clients in product liability and mass tort litigation. She performs legal research and prepares pleadings, motions to compel, demurrers, motions to dismiss, and motions for summary judgment. Mary-Kate takes and defends depositions and examinations under oath and has previously performed substantive work in insurance coverage, tort and catastrophic loss, and labor and employment matters.

In an insurance coverage matter, she helped to set aside a $10.5 million judgment and full release following a judgment entered against a client’s insureds following the striking of the insureds’ answer prior to Mary-Kate’s involvement in the case.

Prior Experience

Before joining Faegre Drinker, Mary-Kate practiced insurance coverage and defense, tort and catastrophic loss, and labor and employment law at a national litigation firm. She performed legal research, prepared objective and persuasive pleadings, made court appearances for various matters, interfaced directly with clients, attended mediations to facilitate settlements for various types of cases, and performed substantive insurance coverage analyses.

While attending the evening division at Loyola Marymount Law School, Mary-Kate worked full-time during the day as a legal assistant for a personal injury and vaccine litigation firm, and later as a law clerk for a business, entertainment and insurance litigation firm. At Loyola, she served as the chief articles editor of the Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review and was a writing tutor for Loyola students, as well as a mentor for incoming students.

Mary-Kate also previously interned for JusticeCorps, where she counseled four to six self-represented litigants per day on family law court system and filing procedures for dissolution of marriage, child custody, paternity and ex parte processes, and translated Spanish documents for monolingual litigants. She also volunteered for the Meserau Free Legal Clinic, where she assisted self-represented litigants with matters ranging from civil to criminal cases, assisting with referrals and outlining the next steps for the litigants’ various matters.

Personal Interests

Outside the office, Mary-Kate enjoys running, hiking, and attending musicals, operas, plays, and visiting art museums and botanical gardens.
