Nikolas G. Spilson

Associate

Overview

Niko Spilson represents medical device and technology clients nationwide in product liability disputes. He is devoted to building genuine relationships grounded in mutual trust, respect and understanding. Having a relationship-focused approach to his practice not only lets him achieve better results, but lets him provide the right results for each client’s unique needs. This mindset also allows him to better connect with his colleagues, and he enjoys training junior associates on best practices for case work-up duties, ensuring that they are well versed in the necessary steps to manage case preparation effectively.

Product Liability Experience

In the product liability space, Niko has extensive experience reviewing case records, utilizing his skillset in thorough analysis and attention to detail to ensure that all relevant data is organized and easily accessible for his case teams. Additionally, Niko communicates and negotiates with opposing counsel, aiming to resolve disputes, clarify positions, and move cases forward efficiently. He also regularly drafts outlines for depositions, and crafts clear, concise questions that align with clients’ legal strategies.

Medical Devices

Niko also assists in medical device cases. Specific experience includes drafting a motion for summary judgment, which was granted in full. This experience honed his skills in identifying critical arguments and supporting them with compelling evidence. Additionally, Niko played a role in drafting multiple motions to dismiss, each of which was granted in full, further sharpening his ability to present legal arguments that persuaded the court. This work allowed Niko to gain valuable experience navigating nuanced jurisdictional and procedural issues, including handling cases involving fraudulent joinder and snap jurisdiction. These cases required an in-depth understanding of intricate legal principles and strategic thinking to achieve favorable outcomes.

Prior Experience

During law school, Niko was a summer associate of the firm for two years. He drafted memoranda on complex legal questions, participated in client calls, and observed administrative hearings for pro bono matters.

At law school, he organized a discussion on diversity, equity and inclusion with Justice Kyra Bolden of the Michigan Supreme Court; volunteered with Know Your Rights, presenting on the Fourth Amendment to students at a Detroit high school to inform them of their constitutional rights during a police interaction; and at the Civil Rights Clinic, he assisted a professor in representing incarcerated clients’ civil rights claims by drafting pleadings, taking depositions, communicating with opposing counsel, and drafting appellate briefs for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

Personal Interests

Outside the office, Niko enjoys seeking out opportunities to mentor youth as well as young professionals with aspirations of attending law school and joining the practice of law. Niko also loves watching and playing basketball, and is active in a local neighborhood league.
