Overview
U.S. Customs & International Trade
Lauren represents domestic and international clients in enforcement and compliance matters before U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), including drafting customs protests, prior disclosures and ruling requests. She also assists clients in crafting responses to formal CBP requests for information and notices of action.
Lauren works with clients on strategic sourcing and import compliance issues. She advises on a range of U.S. import law and regulation-related matters, including tariff classification, valuation, origin determination and marking, and enforcement. With recent U.S. trade policy initiatives, including Section 301 retaliatory duties against China, Lauren assists clients with developing effective mitigation strategies via country-of-origin evaluation and sourcing strategies, active participation in available exclusion processes, and tariff engineering opportunities.
She frequently works with clients on proactive mechanisms to anticipate and reduce duty liability and mitigate import compliance risks. Lauren has obtained beneficial administrative rulings and reduced penalty amounts for clients. In addition, she works with clients to complete tariff classification reviews.
Lauren’s experience also includes a secondment to Amazon, where she advised internal compliance teams on international trade matters.
Representative Experience
- Obtained multiple beneficial binding country-of-origin rulings from CBP relating to various products.
- Assisted a small U.S. importer in successfully negotiating with CBP for a reduced penalty amount after an alleged import violation.
- Provided guidance to a U.S. company on compliance with the FTC’s Made in USA labeling requirements.
- Provided strategic guidance to a U.S. importer on Section 301-related issues, including submission of comments to the U.S. Trade Representative.
- Lead associate on an appeal of an injury determination by the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) before the U.S. Court of International Trade and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
- Lead associate in representing a large U.S. mattress distributor in an injury investigation before the USITC.
- Assisted a multinational producer of office machines in comprehensively revising and updating its import and export compliance policies and procedures, including implementing Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) related compliance provisions.
