Overview

Natalia Birriel Fernández advises clients as they build and protect their valuable intellectual property portfolios.

She supports intellectual property clients by writing legal memoranda, conducting research to answer questions on copyright and trademark matters, preparing takedown notices, and drafting office action responses for the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Prior Experience

Natalia spent two seasons as a summer associate with Faegre Drinker, working with her future colleagues on a variety of matters and practice areas, including intellectual property, litigation, pro bono and regulatory work. She was also a 2023-24 Diversity Legal Fellow and created a blog aimed at simplifying the law school application process to make it more accessible for minority, first-generation and low-income students.

During law school, Natalia was a certified student attorney at the Boston College Law Entrepreneurship and Innovation Clinic, where she helped small local businesses with their legal needs related to operating and starting their ventures. In this role she prepared and filed USPTO trademark applications, set up corporate entities, provided counsel regarding licensing requirements, and developed governance documents. Additionally, Natalia was heavily involved in multiple affinity organizations in her law school, serving as co-vice president of career and academic development in the Latin American Law Student Association and as a director of professional development of the Public Interest Legal Foundation.

Prior to law school, Natalia worked as a facilitator at a small non-profit foundation in Puerto Rico that assists low-income women and survivors of domestic violence and supported the Puerto Rico Civil Rights Commission as an intern.

Personal Interests

Outside of work Natalia enjoys going to concerts, trying out new restaurants, spending time with her husband and her cat, and discovering more of Washington, D.C. When she is able to, Natalia also loves traveling home to visit her family and to relax on the beach. She hopes to explore new travel destinations in the near future.
