Baker & Daniels' Diversity Scholarships to Saulo Delgado, Christopher Kimbrough

INDIANAPOLIS — Saulo Delgado and Christopher Kimbrough, both second-year students at Indiana University law schools, have been awarded Baker & Daniels' 2011 diversity scholarships.

The diversity scholarships consist of a $10,000 scholarship for each student and placement in the firm's summer associate class. Baker & Daniels' diversity scholarships were established in 2007 for students of varied ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds. Lifestyle, disabilities and unique viewpoints are also considered when selecting law students for the award.

Second-year law students at Indiana University-Indianapolis, Indiana University-Bloomington and the University of Notre Dame are eligible for the scholarship. Recipients of the scholarship are selected by Baker & Daniels' diversity executive committee.

Delgado, who attends the Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis, spent his 2010 summer as a law clerk at the Indiana Court of Appeals, researching and writing opinions on various cases under the guidance of Judge Cale Bradford. Fluent in writing, reading and conversational Spanish, he also interned at the Indianapolis Legal Aid Society, helping to bridge the gap between Hispanics and the clinic on a variety of legal issues. Delgado volunteers at St. John's Catholic Church and the National Institute for Fitness and Sports.

From August 2007 to May 2009, Delgado was a translator for the Goshen City Court. He graduated from Indiana University at South Bend in 2007, earning a bachelor's degree with a political science major and Spanish minor. Delgado also was president of the IUSB men's soccer club for two years.

Kimbrough, who attends the Indiana University Maurer School of Law in Bloomington after transferring from the IU School of Law in Indianapolis, served as a clerk in the Office of the Indiana Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division last summer. He is a member of the executive board in the Indianapolis Bar Association's law student section and vice president of the Black Law Students Association. Kimbrough volunteers with the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic, Reach for Youth Teen Court, IBA Ask-A-Lawyer Program and We the People Competition.

Kimbrough was a substitute teacher in the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township, Indianapolis, in 2009-10 and Muscogee County School District, Columbus, Ga., in 2008-09. From Georgia Southern University, he earned a bachelor's degree in 2006 with a political science major and philosophy minor and then a Master of Business Administration in 2008.

The diversity scholarships are one of the first such programs offered by Indiana law firms, demonstrating Baker & Daniels' ongoing commitment to attracting and retaining individuals with diverse backgrounds. The firm maintains an active diversity executive committee, which is responsible for various ongoing internal and external diversity and inclusion initiatives.
