The Impact of COVID-19 on the Nursing Care Industry: Threats and Signs of Recovery

American Bankruptcy Institute

Finance and restructuring partner George Mesires authored an article for American Bankruptcy Institute titled “The Impact of COVID-19 on the Nursing Care Industry: Threats and Signs of Recovery.” Mesires discusses the operational challenges and adverse financial consequences the global pandemic has caused for the skilled-nursing care sector, as well as the modest signs of recovery that the sector has demonstrated.

The article details how the lowered occupancy rates in nursing homes impacted revenue, how the skyrocketed costs of personal protective equipment (PPE) increased their expenses, and the potential litigation threats facing the industry.

Despite these challenges, Mesires highlights that there is some evidence the sector is recovering. He notes that acquisition activity, while subdued in volume, is showing resilience in pricing and that there is evidence that occupancy is steadying.
