George R. Mesires

Partner

Overview

George Mesires is a trusted adviser to companies facing challenges in corporate restructuring, bankruptcy, distressed M&A, and general corporate matters. His practice also includes advising principals, directors and officers on corporate governance, fiduciary duties and strategy in crises and/or in sensitive matters.

George co-leads the firm’s senior living and care segment and is a member of the steering committee of the health and life sciences industry team. He has significant experience in the senior housing industry, representing both for-profit and nonprofit operators in a variety of engagements, including affiliations, acquisitions, financings, litigation, governance matters, government investigations, restructurings and bankruptcy.

George has written and spoken extensively about senior living and care best practices, identifying key takeaways for operators to better prepare themselves for future financial challenges. Given the extent of his experience, George was asked to serve on the boards of The Kendal Corporation — the 14th-largest sponsor of life plan communities in the country (also serving as Chair of the Finance Committee) — and The Admiral at the Lake — the oldest life plan community in Chicago (also serving on the Finance and Community Experience and Compliance Committees). George has been sought out by operators and other constituents to advise on all aspects of senior living and care.

Past Experience

Prior to private practice, George was general counsel for a start-up telecommunications company, where he handled all legal affairs for the company, including the distressed sale process for the sale of substantially all of the company’s assets to a regional telecommunications company.

Before serving as in-house counsel, George was an assistant attorney general in the New York State Attorney General’s Office.

Personal Interests

In George's free time, he enjoys training, handling and hunting with his Labrador retrievers. George also enjoys fishing, alpine skiing and hiking.
