Considering the Ideal Role for Non-Emergency Medical Transportation in Addressing SDOH in Medicaid and Medicare Populations
Managed Healthcare Executive
Faegre Drinker Consulting Advisor Vincent Giglierano and Principal Mike Adelberg coauthored an article for Managed Healthcare Executive on the role that non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) could play in addressing the social determinants of health (SDOH) needs of Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries.
The authors explore what the appropriate role of NEMT to non-medical sites might be by sharing insights from a Medicare Advantage claims analysis and an SDOH transportation survey. They highlight how NEMT helps vulnerable people access healthcare and essential services and is a driver of people’s health and well-being.
Additionally, the authors note that additional research will be needed to understand how these types of interventions directly lead to better health outcomes and impact overall spending within public insurance plans. They also state that policymakers should consider the case for financing comprehensive, appropriate transportation based on medical and social needs.
