Elizabeth J. Carter

Counsel

Overview

Elizabeth Carter works for businesses to defend their contractual rights. While a litigator at heart, Elizabeth realizes the high costs of litigation may not always be the best option for clients. Elizabeth digs deep into every case she works on and works tirelessly to make the client’s goals a reality.

Commercial Disputes

Elizabeth frequently represents businesses in commercial disputes involving breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, fraudulent misrepresentation, tortious interference and misappropriation of trade secrets. Elizabeth has represented clients from a wide range of industries including agribusiness, IT and cloud services, banking and finance, franchising, and telecommunications.

International Arbitration

Elizabeth has represented both foreign and domestic businesses in international arbitrations before the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR).

Employment Litigation

Elizabeth represents employers in non-compete litigations, working to protect employers’ contractual provisions with both employees and independent contractors. Elizabeth also defends employers in claims of alleged independent contractor misclassification.

Foodborne Illness Defense

Elizabeth has defended grocery stores throughout the Midwest in litigations stemming from major foodborne illness outbreaks involving produce and ready-to-eat food items.

Commercial Property Tax Appeals

Elizabeth helps clients navigate negotiations with local assessors and Boards of Review, and when that is not successful, appeals their cases to the Iowa district courts and the Iowa Property Assessment Appeal Board (PAAB).

Appeals

She has appellate experience before the Federal, Seventh and Eighth Circuits, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court.

Prior Experience

Before joining the firm, Elizabeth practiced pharmaceutical patent litigation at an AmLaw 50 firm in Chicago.

Personal Interests

Elizabeth loves to garden, cook, read and spend time with her husband Jared, identical twin daughters Mary and Lily, son Charlie, and nearly identical twin dogs Daisy and Lucy.
