What’s Stopping Progress? Overcoming Barriers to Responsible Investment

UN Principles for Responsible Investment

Overview

Investment management partner Tiffany Reeves joined a roundtable discussion titled “What’s Stopping Progress? Overcoming Barriers to Responsible Investment” for the UN Principles for Responsible Investment annual retreat in Toronto.

The discussion centered on how federal and state legislators have criticized ESG investing, arguing it amounts to “woke capitalism” that abandons the overall goal of fiduciary duty, and have passed laws trying to ban it.

Morningstar covered the panel and their recap of the discussion can be viewed here.

Morningstar highlights how Reeves noted that legislation targeting ESG investments have slowed. According to Reeves, 35 laws aimed at limiting or banning ESG investments passed in 2023. That number fell to only seven in 2024.

“Less bills are introduced, less bills are passing,” Reeves said.
