Colby Kingsbury Honored by DePaul for Pro Bono Work

On April 25, 2013, Colby Anne Kingsbury of Faegre Baker Daniels LLP was awarded DePaul College of Law's 2013 Pro Bono Alumni Award.

The award recognizes DePaul alumni who are dedicated to pro bono work and inspire others to participate in pro bono. Kingsbury was nominated collectively by the six other DePaul College of Law alumni at Faegre Baker Daniels, who have been motivated and inspired by Kingsbury's pro bono efforts.

Kingsbury was selected because of her efforts to increase access to justice and defend civil rights by serving incarcerated individuals, immigrants and youth, both through individual representation and through expansion of pro bono service delivery within the Chicago community and on the African continent.

In 2012, Kingsbury worked with the National Immigrant Justice Center to organize a pro bono clinic, at which she and 23 colleagues assisted 18 young immigrants seeking to participate in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. She is a leader of FaegreBD's pro bono Africa Project in collaboration with Advocates for Human Rights, through which FaegreBD lawyers are participating in advancing the rule of law in African countries. Additionally, Colby has represented inmates of Cook County Jail and the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center in civil rights actions, as well as two immigrants seeking asylum in the United States. Kingsbury is board president of the James B. Moran Center for Youth Advocacy, which provides legal and social services to youth in the Evanston, Ill., area.

The Pro Bono Alumni Award was presented at the College of Law's Annual Service Awards Reception for law students who completed at least 50 hours of service while at DePaul. Kingsbury served as the event's keynote speaker, touching on the highlights of her pro bono cases and the importance of pro bono work.
