In Memoriam: Ray Tierney, Jr.

Our friend and former partner Raymond Tierney Jr. passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 2017.

Ray was a larger-than-life leader of the New Jersey legal community and was instrumental in the growth and success of Shanley & Fisher. He retired from the firm in 1999.

Ray was a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers (a prestigious organization open to less than 2% of all trial lawyers in the United States), a life fellow of the American Bar Foundation, former President of the Trial Attorneys of New Jersey, and former Chair and President of the New Jersey State Bar Foundation.

Ray was often recognized in the legal community for his achievements and received many awards throughout his career, including the St. Thomas More Medal from Seton Hall Law School and the Distinguished Alumnus award from Fordham University School of Law. Ray also received the Trial Bar award from the Trial Attorneys of New Jersey.

Ray is survived by his wife of 61 years, Kathleen; his 5 children, Kathy Snyder (Craig), Alicia Johnson (Doug), Raymond 3rd (Diane), Michael and Christopher (Sandy); 16 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and his twin brother Richard. He was predeceased by his sister Mary Alice Barry and brothers Bill and Jack Tierney.

A wake will be held for Ray on Friday, September 22, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank, New Jersey. A funeral mass will held on Saturday, September 23, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Nativity, 180 Ridge Road, Fairhaven, New Jersey.
