Drinker Biddle’s Executive Women’s Forum Hosts Mika Brzezinski for Discussion on Career Advancement
Drinker Biddle’s Executive Women’s Forum hosted an event featuring news host and best-selling author Mika Brzezinski, where she spoke about the newly released version of her book, Know Your Value.
During the discussion, moderated by Washington D.C. partner and chair of the firm’s Government Contracts Team Jessica Abrahams, Mika shared stories about her career and advice on how women can achieve their deserved recognition and financial worth in the workplace. Highlights included:
Be “in the moment”
Mika said that many women are often so worried about pleasing others and wanting to be liked that they don’t always speak up for themselves “in the moment,” like many men do. She suggested being aware of when you’re “in the moment” so that you can advocate for yourself and your ideas.
Hit the “reset button”
Focusing on past mistakes can undermine confidence and limit professional advancement. It is important to learn how to hit the “reset button” and move on.
Take public speaking lessons
Mika suggested taking public speaking lessons that include videotaping yourself so you can communicate as effectively and confidently as possible.
Find a sponsor
While mentors are valuable, Mika emphasized that it’s even better if you find a sponsor – someone that will help you get to the next level by introducing you to the right people who may be able to help you advance, and who can provide sound career advice.
