Cheryl Orr Named a 2022 ‘Top Labor & Employment Lawyer’ by Daily Journal
International labor and employment practice group and San Francisco office leader Cheryl Orr has been selected by the Daily Journal as one of the “Top Labor & Employment Lawyers” for 2022. The list recognizes California’s top attorneys who have made significant contributions to labor and employment law. This is the eighth time that Cheryl has been included on this list of leading attorneys.
In a feature profile, the Daily Journal highlighted Cheryl’s practice that focuses on wage and hour class action defense, including Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) collective actions and Private Attorneys General Act (PAGA) suits.
Regarding her responsibilities at the firm, Cheryl said, “I like having the mix of my own practice and the honor of managing a 100-person strong labor and employment group across the country.” She added, “We have six teams specializing in counseling, litigation, traditional labor, restrictive covenants and pay equity.”
The publication also emphasized Cheryl’s reputation for resolving matters early and expeditiously, often through dispositive motions. “We have a very active motion practice and aggressively approach each of our cases,” Cheryl stated. “For example, in the last few months, we successfully opposed a motion to remand brought against a major automobile company, which was significant because it tested whether removal of wage and hour class actions can be based on assumptions stemming from the pleadings.”
One issue Cheryl said will affect clients is a U.S. Supreme Court decision concerning a potential conflict between federal and state arbitration laws. She stated that this decision “will most probably lead to more litigation in California state courts over the arbitrability of PAGA suits.” Cheryl added, “We will be discussing this with our clients and reevaluating their arbitration agreements.”
