Kristin Shepard and Paul Cauley Join Panels at DRI Business Litigation Super Conference

Washington, D.C. partner Kristin Ann Shepard and Dallas partner Paul Cauley, Jr. spoke at the DRI Business Litigation Super Conference, held May 8−10, 2019, in Austin, Texas. Kristin moderated the panel “Current Trends in Data Breach Litigation” on May 9, and Paul was a panelist for “Is Your Case Special? The Use of Special Masters in Class Actions and Multidistrict Litigation” on May 10.

Kristin’s panel discussed strategies for defending data breach class actions. Panelists explored possible motions to dismiss for lack of Article III standing, alternate bases for dismissal, defenses to class certification, and ideas to reduce litigation and settlement exposure. Other speakers included Jon Kardassakis from Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard and Smith LLP and Martha L. Kohlstrand from Ice Miller LLP.

Paul’s panel discussed the multiple potential uses of special masters, addressed procedures for appointing special masters, and provided tips for working effectively with them in order to manage or resolve litigation efficiently. This panel was moderated by Tracey L. Turnbull from Porter Wright Morris & Arthur LLP; other speakers included Francis E. McGovern from Duke University School of Law and the Honorable Dan Aaron Polster.
