Washington, D.C. partner Shaunda Patterson-Strachan presented in a panel at the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) ReFocus2020: External Factors, Internal Impact, held March 1-4, 2020, in Las Vegas, NV. The panel, titled “Cost of Insurance (COI) Litigation: The Current Landscape,” discussed the life insurance industry’s steady rise in litigation associated with COI rates on universal life (UL), indexed UL and variable UL contracts. In some cases, this litigation relates to insurer increases of in-force policy COI charges. Moderator Amanda Todd, Partner, Sidley Austin LLP, and speakers Tim Pfeifer, President, Pfeifer Advisory, and Shaunda discussed the history of COI litigation, the present environment and possible future directions in addition to the roles played by actuaries in such developments.
