Minnesota Lobbying and Campaign Finance Update

Webinar

Overview

Last session the Minnesota Legislature passed a number of changes impacting state and local government lobbying and political activity. It enacted a number of new requirements changing the nature of information lobbyists and lobbyist principals must disclose when engaging with the Minnesota Legislature and state administrative agencies. At the local level, it significantly expanded the scope of what advocacy activity must be reported to include most attempts to influence actions of elected and appointed local officials, including zoning and ordinance changes, liquor license approvals, budget approvals, and more, as well as expanding the number of covered political subdivisions to include most of all cities, counties, school districts and townships. The Minnesota Legislature also enacted a number of new campaign finance provisions expanding the range of communications that may require reporting and restricting the ability of certain foreign influenced corporations to participate in Minnesota’s political process.

Join Jeff Sigurdson, executive director of the Minnesota Campaign Finance Board, and Faegre Drinker Partner Dave Johnson to learn more about these changes, what it means for attorneys and other advocates who work with state and local governments, and get updated on the Board’s efforts to implement these provisions. The program will also feature an update on the Chamber v. Choi lawsuit challenging the recently enacted prohibitions on foreign influenced corporation political activity from Faegre Drinker Partner Aaron Van Oort.
