Colby Kingsbury Shares Thoughts on Legal Career in Chicago Lawyer Q&A

After studying theater in college and then moving to Los Angeles for a year, Colby Anne Kingsbury realized it was time to make a new choice. "I'd always thought about law school, and I kept my grades up thinking that if I wanted to go back to school that might be something I'd do," she told Chicago Lawyer magazine in a Q&A.

Kingsbury earned her law degree from DePaul University College of Law in 2000. Today, she's a partner at Baker & Daniels where her litigation practice includes commercial, employment and intellectual property litigation. Kingsbury also has significant experience in employment and labor disputes.

When asked by Chicago Lawyer what's the last big deal or case she handled that she could discuss, and what it entailed, Kingsbury replied:

"Friday was pretty fun. We were defendants for a TRO and it didn't end up actually going forward, but it was amazing to me how the whole thing could have been avoided. It just required getting the right people in the room to talk about the issues. It always amazes me how many different roles you take on as an attorney. Frankly, in that setting, and not with respect to my client but with respect to the other client, I felt almost more like a mom. I was just trying to get the other side to open up and talk about what's wrong. When he finally did, it was such a small issue, a miscommunication, that is now being easily resolved."

In the Q&A, Kingsbury, the mother of two daughters, talked about many other topics - from the strangest thing that's happened to her as a lawyer to who she'd most like to have lunch with (President Obama) to advise for new lawyers to her favorite Chicago restaurant.
