Katrina Gossett Shows Off Stylish, Spacious Kitchen

Soft hues, lots of light and custom-made furniture give Katrina Gossett's condominium an air of the sea and make it ideal for both entertaining and navigating in her power wheelchair, the Indianapolis Star reported in the article, "Downtown Condo's Stylish Kitchen Accommodates Owner in Wheelchair."

"Almost every room is a shade of pastel," said Gossett, who works a few blocks away at Faegre Baker Daniels. Her kitchen walls are painted a pale blue, and a backsplash of iridescent tiles resembles abalone shells, combining her love of color and the ocean.

"I had a friend tell me, 'Paint your kitchen blue, and you won't eat as much," Gossett told the Indianapolis Star.

The spacious kitchen includes a bird's-eye view of downtown Indianapolis, mocha hardwood, a large dining table and a custom-made island, making the room ideal for entertaining. Gossett hosts progressive dinners and movie nights with friends, showing them one of her more than 150 romantic comedies and fixing tasty treats. She's especially a fan of soups. "My favorites are beer cheese and split pea," she said.

Diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy when she was 13 months old, Gossett has used a power wheelchair since she was three. The openness of her condo gives her space to move around while a low table with a built-in lazy Susan and a granite-topped island designed to fit a wheelchair underneath accommodate seating.

"I'm not very strong, so I can't pull things out of the microwave or fridge, but I wanted to make the kitchen functional, yet practical for resale," Gossett told the Star. "It's been an adventure in decorating and the space is really all about entertaining."

The room's décor is completed by modern chrome lighting, an artsy pendulum light fixture and a wine fridge. Chair covers in shades of teal and chocolate brown with a touch of polka dot emphasize the room's oceanic vibe.
