  • Faegre Drinker's digital health team is excited to announce the “From the Inside Out” Leadership Series. We'll be hosting candid conversations with clients, firm friends and colleagues to discuss hot topics in the health and life sciences industry. After each of these “inside” discussions, we’ll share “out” key takeaways and tidbits with the goal of inspiring new thinking and collaboration — whether with us, our clients, or in any other way we can help support the digital health community.

In celebration of Women's Health Month in May, we hosted Joanna Strober, founder and CEO of Midi Health. Founded in 2021, Midi's mission is to revolutionize health care for women in midlife. As the fastest-growing virtual clinic focused on perimenopause and menopause, Midi is dedicated to closing the care gap and empowering women in their health care journey. Joanna shed light on the current shortcomings in women's health care and the vast potential of this growing market.

Here’s what we learned:

COVID Was the Turning Point

For years, there has been a lack of accessible, high-quality menopause care for women in midlife. A key turning point came during the COVID-19 pandemic. As regulations evolved, the possibility of building a nationwide company with comprehensive insurance coverage for women's needs became a reality. Recognizing this moment as a game-changer fueled excitement and propelled the creation of Midi.

20 Years of Misinformation

Midi was founded with a mission to combat the 20-year legacy of misinformation surrounding hormone therapy for women. A widely publicized study in the early 2000s raised safety concerns, leading to a significant decline in research and hindering progress in women's health for decades. It is now agreed that the study was misinterpreted, and hormone therapy is generally considered safe and effective for women.  However, the lack of research over the past few decades has created a substantial gap in knowledge that Midi is actively working to bridge.

Front Door to Health Care for Women

Midi is positioned to become a trusted entry point for women's health care. It prioritizes providing patients with the care they need within its network, but also recognizes the importance of seamless collaboration with other health care providers. By establishing partnerships with health systems across the country, Midi can ensure women receive comprehensive care, addressing both their menopause and perimenopause needs as well as any other health concerns. This collaborative approach fills a critical gap, as the needs of women in midlife have been largely unmet for too long.

Scaling High-Quality Care

Midi’s rapid growth has been driven by the immense need for its services. Currently, the biggest challenge isn't finding women who need midlife care, it's training providers fast enough to meet the demand. Midi invests heavily in training, monitoring and mentorship to ensure their providers deliver the highest quality care possible. There's a critical need to demonstrate the unprecedented market opportunity within women's health care, so by establishing their presence Midi is showcasing the vast potential of this market, which they hope will attract the investment required to revolutionize care for women.

Using Technology to Ensure High Performance

Midi is passionate about scaling access to exceptional women's health care. It leverages technology to ensure optimized performance, allowing providers to spend more quality time with patients. This includes using AI for tasks like recording appointments and reviewing charts, freeing up valuable time for personalized care.
