Kathy Osborn Discusses Goals of Indiana Supreme Court Commission on Indiana’s Legal Future With Indiana Lawyer

Business litigation partner and antitrust team co-chair Kathy Osborn was recently appointed to the Indiana Supreme Court Commission on Indiana’s Legal Future and provided an overview of the commission’s goals to the Indiana Lawyer for their article “State Panel begins work to find lawyer shortage solutions.”

The Commission on Indiana’s Legal Future, comprised of 23 state legislators, judges, attorneys and educators, is aimed at making Indiana a more appealing place to practice law.

Osborn shared that the committee is drawing inspiration from the Utah “sandbox” program as they brainstorm how business and licensure models could be adjusted to combat the attorney shortage. “Our group is looking at limited license paralegals or limited licensed professionals,” said Osborn. “Are there different kinds of certifications that we could provide to paralegals who have the right training to be able to represent those individuals without the oversight of a barred attorney?”

“I am confident that the commission and the various work groups will come up with some good, creative ideas and hopefully get some things in place sooner rather than later to help,” she added.
