Alyssa Eckerley Case is a reliable guide to companies of all sizes — from budding startups and single inventors to multinational corporations — as they evaluate existing and emerging intellectual property challenges and opportunities. Alyssa devises high-impact strategies that protect and grow intellectual property portfolios, both domestic and abroad.

Alyssa leverages her tactical experience, including her experience as a registered patent agent, to help clients evaluate the viability of new products through freedom-to-operate and patentability analyses. With firsthand knowledge assisting startups and inventors secure IP protection in both the trademark and patent spaces, Alyssa deeply understands the challenges of innovating new technologies. She also recognizes that strategic flexibility can overcome these challenges and successfully bring new technologies to market.

Patents and Portfolio Management

Alyssa helps clients in various industries and business sectors — including automotive, biotechnology, chemical, manufacturing, health care and wholesale trade spaces — to guide applications from their initial drafting stage to issuing as patents. She has particular focus on foreign patent prosecution and serves as the reliable point of contact between her clients (and their global portfolios) and foreign examiners, coordinating efforts and helping ensure seamless progression in each jurisdiction.

Alyssa has extensive experience navigating the complex landscape of international patent law and manages an extensive volume of foreign patent prosecution. She adeptly handles nuances of various regulatory organizations and their examiners and has a robust working knowledge of patent laws across the EU, India, China, Japan, Mexico, Australia and Canada. Alyssa utilizes her experience and knowledge to push existing parameters in securing patent approvals for clients

Prior Experience

During law school, Alyssa gained valuable experience as an intellectual property intern for a health care equipment manufacturer and, later, worked in a similar capacity for a major agricultural chemicals and biotechnology company.

Alyssa also served as a graduate research assistant at Indiana University, supporting research on sundry areas of intellectual property law, including the cross-section between patent law and antitrust law, trademark law, design patent law, and both American Invents Act (AIA) and pre-AIA sections of utility patent law.

Personal Interests

During the summer, Alyssa loves to spend time in the sun, whether lounging on the beach, fishing, boating, grilling out, or spending time with friends and family on the patio. In the colder months, you can find her reading through her book list or cheering on the Indiana Hoosiers. All year round, she is picking out her next travel destination or working toward her personal best in the weight room.

Pro Bono

In her work at the IP Law Clinic at Indiana University’s Maurer School of Law, Alyssa mentors students as they work on real-life patent preparations and prosecutions as they draft applications (domestic), interact with clients and the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and learn about patentability searching and infringement investigations.

She also works with single inventor clients and small businesses to build out their patent portfolios.
