Overview

Carly Helman advises health care and health and life science industry clients on transactional, regulatory, contracting and compliance matters. Carly is a member of both the firm’s FDA regulatory team and the privacy, cybersecurity & data strategy team, and applies their interdisciplinary experience to provide thorough and nuanced advice to clients on clinical research, FDA regulatory and privacy issues. 

Health Care

Carly provides transactional and regulatory support to health care clients on a wide range of issues, including physician employment agreements, non-physician vendor contracting, licensing and accreditation, and compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). 

Drug and Device Regulatory

Carly advises health and life science companies, including major pharmaceutical and medical device companies, research institutions and academic medical centers, to support drug and device research and development. They help clients by negotiating and developing clinical trial agreements, informed consent forms, policies and procedures, vendor and CRO agreements, and other research collaboration agreements in the U.S. and abroad. Carly also advises clients on complex data use issues in clinical research, including pseudonymized research results, genetic samples and health data.

Privacy and Cybersecurity

Carly supports clients across a broad range of industry sectors on compliance issues related to the GDPR, CCPA, and other privacy statutes and regulations. In particular, they help clients navigate and manage compliance with emerging U.S. state privacy laws. Carly drafts and negotiate data protection agreements, consumer-facing privacy notices and policies, and internal privacy resources. 

Prior Experience

Before joining Faegre Drinker, Carly was an extern with U.S. Magistrate Judge Sidney Schenkier in the Northern District of Illinois. As a student attorney for the Civitas ChildLaw Center at Loyola University Chicago School of Law, Carly served as a lead attorney for children in the child protection system and children involved in contentious domestic relation cases. Prior to attending law school, Carly spent two years a volunteer coordinator with AmeriCorps working on projects related to education, nutrition, literacy and community revitalization. 

Personal Interests

Carly is an avid traveler, with a lifetime goal to visit every U.S. national park, every continent, and see as many UNESCO World Heritage sites as possible. When closer to home, Carly enjoys strategy board games, rock climbing, and hiking.
