Our firm represented a group of tenants pro bono in a highly publicized tenant remedies action against one of Minneapolis’ largest private landlords over his systemic failure to properly maintain his properties.
The trial team secured orders which required the landlord to turn the building over to an administrator to remedy the health and safety concerns and to pay a record-breaking amount of rent back to the low-income tenants The team also exposed the landlord’s fraudulent business practices and false representations to the city and the court, which resulted in a record-breaking sanctions order by the court and the revocation of all of his rental licenses by the City of Minneapolis.
This work also formed the basis for ground-breaking class action lawsuits on behalf of all the landlord’s former tenants to recover illegally obtained rent and to block fraudulent sales of the buildings to sham buyers.
